		<title>A Bike City for Everyone!</title>

<p>Spacescape have developed a new method to analyze bike cities, the “bike city model”. This model includes a study of the local bikers preferences, a study of the municipality goals related to bike use and innovative analysis of the bicycle network qualities and flaws.<span id="more-1103"></span></p>
<p>In order to maintain a high bike share of travel modes and simultaneously attract more groups to ride a bike, the city of Örebro requested a broad bike network analyse where all the critical values of a bike city is mapped and visualized. Evidence based analytical methods have therefore been taken from both transportation and urban research. The variety of bike network qualities, the level of detail and the geographic boundaries probably makes the study unique in the world.</p>
<p>The project has led to three recommendations for a more attractive bike city:</p>
<p><em>- Prioritize densification within 3 km from the city center</em></p>
<p>High density and overall location of trade and jobs growing nearby and reduce car dependency</p>
<p><em>- Increase the proximity of cycle paths</em></p>
<p>More cycle paths reduces the mesh in the cycling network and increases the propensity and the accessibility of the city</p>
<p><em>- Develop variety of cycle routes categories</em></p>
<p>Freedom of choice between different kinds of bicycle paths increase the availability for different groups and for different purposes</p>
<p>These three recommendations are in turn embodied in a future cycling network with four different route choices: “Örebro express”, “Örebro direct”, “Örebro recreation” and “Örebro stret life”. Based on the goal of a coherent network of safe streets and different route qualities, links that has to improve their bikeway standard and totally new cycle routes has been identified.</p>
<p>The project was funded by the Delegation for Sustainable Cities and the city of Örebro. The developed analytical model is based on the &#8220;The Bike City – urban planning and the return of mainstream bikers”, an R &#038; D project funded by Vinnova and ARQ. All analyses have been carefully reviewed by the municipal bike experts.</p>

<p>Betweeness. A demanded bike route quality based on spatial relationships between streets. Betweeness shows a form of spatial directness but can also, according to research, explain the spatial potential for natural bike movement though the city. Red street are more “in between”. Blue is less.</p>
